The 2014 SciWorld Online Convention was an online convention for the play-by-post role-playing community. It was the 12th SciWorld Online Convention and was held from Thursday, May 1 through Saturday, May 3, 2014, in IRC chat rooms located in the Xertion IRC network. It was organized by Role Play Wiki due to their merge with SimEnc in November 2013. In contrary to previous years, it did not have a host.

OrganizationEdit

The 2014 Convention was the first of which the organization was open for public discussion, as well as the first to be organized at the Role Play Wiki. This was unlike previous conventions, which were organized privately by a select team.

In December 2013,[1] Yatalu established a forum on Role Play Wiki where any interested individual could take part in organizing the convention. Discussions began in earnest in February, and continued through March, including a vote to pick the date for the convention.[2] The schedule of events was developed at a separate talk page.[3] Work on the schedule began in early April and continued until the time of the convention.

PromotionEdit

Advertising for the convention began in mid April, with posts at Ongoing Worlds[4] and PBEMPlayers.[5] Outreach to various role-playing groups, organizations, and wikis soon followed. On April 26, an e-mail group for the convention was launched.[6]

Additionally, Twitter was used rather frequently throughout the span of the event itself, both by Role Play Wiki and by twitter accounts of other groups such as Ongoing Worlds and Starfleet Legacy Alliance. These tweets usually made use of the hashtag #2014SciWorld.

LocationEdit

The convention was held online, in the Xertion IRC network. Two channels were set up on Xertion explicitly for SciWorld: #SciWorld1 and #SciWorld2.

ScheduleEdit

For addition of your event to the schedule, see User:Yatalu/SciWorld.
For the version of the schedule meant for participants, see Project:SciWorld.

The 2014 SciWorld schedule spanned from Thursday May 1 until Sunday May 4, 2014. Times displayed here are in universal coordinated time (UTC).

ParticipationEdit

The convention was well-received, despite the fact that the second IRC room only had events ongoing for seven out of 28 available event slots. This channel however was used for offtopic conversation, since the first was always occupied with events. #SciWorld1 and #SciWorld2 had channel participation peaks of 30 and 24 users respectively, with more than 15 users every day at the start of the events.
