USS Oberth was an Oberth class Star Trek movie-era sim that was formed in March 1987, and held its first sim a month later. Some believe it to be the first true sim. The crew played through a mixture of preplanned scripts for missions where the game was fully scripted by the crew for several months before they would actually play the game out through chat. After the start of Star Trek: The Next Generation built interest in playing in a simulation based on Star Trek, membership for the game exploded and created a need for the original seven person crew to develop both training methods and more games so the ship doesn't become over populated.

After a total of three missions, and the expansion of the crew membership to almost twenty, the team that was the original seven split the game in two and moved their creation into the Star Trek: The Next Generation time period. At that time the Oberth closed.
